Keep the Rust Away: How to Properly Install Waterproof Seals in Your Gun Safe

As gun owners, we spend thousands of dollars on our collection. But here is the hard truth: your heavy-duty steel safe might protect your firearms from theft, but it isn’t naturally airtight. Without a proper seal, moisture, humidity, and dust can creep in, leading to the number one enemy of steel—rust.

If you’ve picked up a high-quality seal like the REPDM-DJ Series, you’re halfway there. But a seal is only as good as its installation. Today, I’m walking you through the professional way to install waterproof seals to ensure your vault stays bone-dry.

Phase 1: Prep is Everything

You wouldn’t paint a dirty car, right? The same logic applies here. For the adhesive to bond permanently, the surface must be clinical.

  • Degrease the Surface: Clean the installation area thoroughly. You need to remove all grease, dust, or residue from cleaning agents.

  • The “Pro” Tip: If you are replacing an old, crusty seal, don’t just pull it off and stick the new one on. Use a dedicated glue remover to get rid of every bit of old adhesive.

  • Dry it Out: Wait for the surface to dry completely. Any moisture trapped under the adhesive will cause it to fail prematurely.

Phase 2: Measure Twice, Cut Once

The REPDM-DJ series is user-friendly because it’s flexible. You can measure the required length beforehand and cut it with standard workshop scissors.

Alternatively, if you’re confident in your handling, you can apply the seal directly from the roll and cut it as you go for a perfect fit.

Phase 3: The “Front vs. Side” Strategy

Depending on your safe’s design, you’ll install the seal on either the front frame or the side jamb. Here is the golden rule for combining waterproof seals with your existing fire seals:

  1. If your fire seal is on the front: Install the waterproof seal on the side.

  2. If your fire seal is on the side: Install the waterproof seal on the front.

  3. The Priority Rule: Regardless of the configuration, always install the front seal first to ensure the best coverage.

Phase 4: Precision Installation

  • The 45-Degree Miter: For those installing on the front face, don’t just “fold” the seal at the corners. For a professional, watertight finish, make a 45-degree angle cut at the corners and join them using fireproof adhesive.

  • The Final Press: Once positioned, press the strip down firmly along the entire length to activate the bond.

Important: The “Grace Period”

One of the best features of these seals is the delayed adhesion. If you realize you’ve misaligned a section during the initial install, don’t panic—you can remove and reset it.

However, once that seal has been sitting for one hour, it’s locked in. Do not try to move it after the 60-minute mark, or you’ll ruin the adhesive backing.

Final Thoughts

Installing a waterproof seal is a small investment of time that pays massive dividends in preserving the value of your firearms. Take it slow, get those 45-degree corners tight, and give your guns the environment they deserve.
